Accomplishements
The People's Food Policy Project (PFPP) was launched at the biennial National Assembly of Food Secure Canada in Ottawa, November, 2008. The project Coordinating Committee (now Steering Team) worked for more than a year to develop the concept of the project, consulting with more than 70 food movement leaders in all the provinces and the Yukon. A number of these people are now PFPP animators in their communities and working as the local food hub for the project. The strength of this project lies in the fact that it is filling a gap that was identified by food leaders across Canada - that of federal food policy development and advocacy.
Since November 2008, we have:
- Had Kitchen Table Talks with approximately 900 people across Canada that generated 265 policy submissions (another 100 submitted policy ideas independently through our website).
- Summarized these policy submissions into 10 discussion papers that will eventually make up the People's Food Policy. These papers will be made available on our website during the summer of 2010.
- Designed and circulated over 4000 Stories of Food Sovereignty pamphlets, helping to inform people about food sovereignty and what it means in through stories of people.
- Built the infrastructure for the project including a Management Team, a Steering Team, the Animators, 10 Policy Writing Teams and a Senior Editors team (amounting to ~80 volunteers).
- Convened half of our team for a Policy Retreat for a weekend of thinking and team building in the beautiful Laurentians Mountains in Quebec.
- Built this website that acts as a convening space for all of us to share information and coordinate our actions.
We are now getting ready for our next phase of Kitchen Table Talks - and we invite you to be a part of it! See Get Involved for more information.
